Biodiversity Policy & Practice The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a report on the impacts of pesticides on wild bees titled, 'Aspects Determining the Risk of Pesticides to Wild Bees: Risk profiles for focal crops on three continents.' The document assesses pesticide exposure of key crop pollinators including honey bees and wild bee species, through the development of risk profiles for cropping systems in Brazil, Kenya and the Netherlands.
According to the report, current registration procedures of pesticides are based on information related to the European honey bee, and as a result, the toxicity of pesticides to pollinators in developing countries has not been tested. The report begins to redress this gap through the development of risk profiles for cropping systems in Brazil, Kenya and the Netherlands. The risk profiles are intended to provide a qualitative evaluation of pesticide risks to bees in specific settings, and can be used to compare risks between different settings, identify gaps in information, set priorities for research and establish priorities for risk mitigation.
The 66-page report was produced as part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)/UN Environment Programme (UNEP) supported project 'Conservation and Management of Pollinators for Sustainable Agriculture, Through an Ecosystem Approach.'
