Job vacancy at Leeds University
14.12.2010

Research Fellow: Towards sustainable pollination services for UK crops

You will use existing databases on biodiversity, environment, agriculture and beekeeping to produce models that can predict the occurrence of wild and managed pollinators and of the pollination services that they are expected to provide to focal UK crops. You will be involved in testing some of the model predictions and in testing some management measures that can mitigate against loss of pollinators and pollination services. The work will mostly involve data gathering, geo-spatial and statistical analysis and species distribution modelling (i.e. linking species occurrence to climate, habitat, land use and other parameters). In addition, you will survey beekeeping and farming needs in relation to crop pollination. You will interact with different groups of researchers and stakeholders (e.g. farmers, beekeepers), both to gather relevant data for the project and to disseminate and discuss the research findings. You must possess extensive knowledge of statistical and spatial analysis of large biodiversity databases, particularly species distribution modelling. Excellent communication and leadership skills are also essential given the need to set-up collaborations with various data-holders and interested partners. You will work in a large collaborative team with partners from Leeds, Reading and the Food and Environment Research Agency in York. You will be based in Leeds but you will also be required to spend extensive periods in the Netherlands or Denmark.

You will have a first degree and PhD in spatial ecology, GIS, or a closely allied discipline and a strong background in community ecology or functional agro-biodiversity.

University Grade 7 (£29,853 - £35,646 p.a.)
